Gary’s Note: We’ve been exploring what’s wrong with Detroit. Now it’s time to see what Detroit may be doing right. Detroit’s downsizing could become the ideal of post industrial urbanism in the U.S. Mark Dowie shows us how the blighted, overgrown and largely abandoned industrial city can be reformed into the smaller communities and local agriculture it replaced.

Gary’s Note: Too big not to fail. That’s how James Howard Kunstler sees the hyper-complex institutions we take for granted, including government and corporations. When the reality sets in there will be very real losses for much of the country’s population.

INVOCATION

A miracle is the wholehearted invocation
of the Divine, combined with suspension
of all disbelief
Allowing the Other World to
Shatter and reconstitute this world.
Through Invocation, the dead are raised
and the blind see again.
Invocation is how the multitudes of the hungry a…

Dear Friends and Members.
A long time friend of mine, David Karr, in Minneapolis, joined BuIlding the Movement recently and then posted the key question:
AND THE POINT TO THIS IS WHAT?
Shortly thereafter he called me and said "You know there are so many websites, constantly contacting me and asking me to sign up -- and I just get fed up and tired with it all." What is happening according to one stages of grief scientist is that we are becoming numb, creating a fire wall of social isolat…

From a blog post by Chris Martenson:

"The Guardian published an explosive article today. If true, it means that governments have been intentionally overstating the amount of oil that we have and could pump out of the ground. The implications are enormous..."

In ecology, “invasive species” are species that evolve in one type of ecosystem and either move, or are moved, into another type of ecosystem. Once there, they typically wreak havoc by outcompeting native species. Humans are arguably the most successful invasive species on the planet; and will continue to be, until we either change, or finish driving ourselves extinct along with as many other species as we can take with us.
Our corporations and empire-building nations are perhaps the most visib…

Hello and Good Day!
My name is Anthony Vail, and i am the current opperator of the Welshire East Neighborhood CSA. We began in April of 2009 as a small group of neighbors commited to creating a sustainable local source of fresh seasonal produce. We accomplished this by converting what was once wasted lawn space into organic veggie gardens. We have had very humble beginings, but we managed to make this year an astounding success for all the members.
At this time i am currently involved in sever…

I am sharing this story because of inspiration I have taken from Forrest Craver's most recent posts:
There came a time in our community when we grew tired of arguing over who was right and who was wrong. Despite all the arguing there were still hungry people and the environment kept declining. What we needed was more places for people, plants and creatures to fit.
Then we came to realize that the market could not solve all our problems. The market is wonderful for what it does – a spur…
