Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I attended the first Boulder Transition Gathering on Nov 9th and the Longmont kickoff as a resource person. As a Sustainable Development consultant, I get to speak to national media on occasion and always use that opportunity to bring up Transition and the numerous opportunities it offers. I look forward to further involvement in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead!
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
As my website begins ... Sustainability… it is no longer an option … it has become an imperative for our society. Making the transition from our current society to one that is renewable, supportive and life enhancing is a requirement.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I have been working to promote sustainable development since the late 1970's. I graduated with degrees in Biology and Environmental Planning in 1980, and have been a professional chef, owner of a solar design and construction company, a meeting and large scale event planner, teacher of group facilitation and consensus decision making skills, a consultant to governmental agencies concerning energy and water conservation issues, and over the past 18 years, a national consultant in the Cohousing movement in the areas of marketing, public relations, group process skills and the sustainable development process.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
Our company Abraham Paiss and Associates, is a Marketing and Public Relations firm specializing in education about sustainable solutions.

Creating Our Future Together

Today we have the incredible opportunity to change lanes on the global superhighway. The election of Barak Obama offers us a short window of opportunity to propose bold strategies to assist our country, and by example, the rest of the world towards a new vision of the future.

President Elect Obama has stated that he want to focus on job creation so I though I would add in my two cents worth. Please look this over and let me know your thoughts.

Together we can be the changes we want to see in t… Continue

I have a master gardener friend (also a permaculture instructor), but she's down in Manitou Springs. She's up in this area from time to time, but you probably want to find someone a little closer to the action. Let me know.

Hi Zev,
I did a little research about this a couple of months ago myself. The answer was not set in stone, however. It depended on what kind of food you're talking about. Vegan? Chickens? Beef? There was a study done on a farm on Lopez Island through a university in Washington (sorry, I don't have the URL or reference at the moment) that determined how much labor, energy and land is necessary to grow only vegetables and grains versus having some kind of livestock. The conclusion was that having some livestock as a food source greatly reduced the amount of land needed to feed people, since it takes so much labor (weeding, harvesting, planting) and land to grow protein equivalents (soy) as well as other crops.

Therefore the answer is -- what is your population eating? Can we feed 100,000 vegans with 159 square miles of land? Maybe not. Can we feed omnivores with about an acre a person? Probably.

There are 742 square miles of land in Boulder County. If you include the land that's now people's lawns and backyards, including parks and open space, you may have enough land to feed everyone - but who is to say that you need to limit yourself to Boulder County? The density in the surrounding counties in the eastern plains is much less.

The major shift that would have to take place in feeding people bioregionally would be how many people would need to be employed in agriculture. Right now, only about 1% of the population grows food. We would need 20% to be directly involved in agriculture. Having land is one thing; having the labor to produce organic food for 100,000 people year round is quite another.

I wouldn't mind working on a farm. How about you?

Thank You for your comment. I believe that the transition movement is not only about how we function relative to the Earth and Sun but should also evolve a Culture that celebrates this connection though song, dress and the arts. We need to once again develop interactions that allow ourselves to express individuality and creativity and at the same time build Earth/Sun Consciousness.
