Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am on the Steering Group for Transition Boulder, the Transition initiative for the city of Boulder.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Even without Peak Oil and Global Climate Change, the message of transition is important because communities have weakened and we have lost millennia of accumulated culture practically overnight to the forces of modernization. Transition will allow us to rebuild what we've lost.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
Permaculture
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I have initiated the transition initiative for the city of Boulder. I also give talks and facilitate discussions on Transition.

'Energy Inefficient' NY Times Editorial

An editorial in the Times today hits it right on the head: go after inefficiency first. As a country, we tend to look to technology to fix many of our problems when simpler solutions are possible.

I commend the Times on this well thought out editorial.

Future of Colorado Agriculture

What role do rural communities play in agriculture's future? What opportunities will change the structure of agriculture in the future?

Coal: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Further proof that coal ain't just bad when you mine it or burn it. There is also no good way to dispose of the toxic coal ash. One poor town in Tennessee found this out the hard way.

Hi Todd, long time no talk, I know. Sorry I dropped off the planet. We have been totally immersed in creating the Vegetable a Month online magazine and cooking club. Anyway, my daughter's boyfriend is a senior at CU, a poli sci guy who is doing a food writing class. They must volunteer 15 hours in a food related position. He is very interested in the whole sustainable food idea, and would like to see if you have any volunteer needs. I don't think it needs to be anything fancy. Let me know and I'll pass it on, but if you don't mind could you please send to my email: mcr@everydaygoodeating.com. I'm old-fashioned and don't get this group thing too well. Also, I still am very interested in the City initiative and will try to reengage.

Todd,

Buenas dias! I'm doing well...taking things easy. It's a slower pace down here, so that's the way you do it. Nobody is in a hurry. Did you hear about the earthquake down here? I told Lisa about it. I was on the nearest "semi-active" volcano at the time, about 10km from the epicenter (6.2 richter). We couldn't see into the crater because the clouds (fog?) moved in early that day, so nobody knew what was going on down in "the pit," although there were some geologists down there at the time, so we all hoped the best for them. It's one thing to be in California...when you feel an earthquake, you know it's an earthquake. But when the earth starts shaking and you're standing on top of a volcano, the thought of "eruption" comes to mind! However, about 30 seconds after the shaking stops, you just pause, look around (with senses accutely sharpened), and come to the conclusion that since there aren't any fireballs flying up in the air or landing at your feet that, yes, it was probably just an earthquake. At the same time, I also found myself thinking "why pretend I know what's really going on?...let`s get the heck off this mountain!" Anyway, I survived. We had to pull a few fallen trees off the road and drive under some downed powerlines, but we got that tour bus back down the hill. Many locals in the neighboring villages weren't as lucky however.

About Obama... Unfortunately, I didn't see the innaguration. If I were still in my budget hotel room, I could have watched it an english speaking CNN channel. However, I recently moved in with my host family near the school where I'm talking Spanish lessons. They apparently don't have the deluxe cable package...only a few spanish channels. I at least saw some clips from the local news. The funniest clip was from some place (couldn't understand where), the people had a 50ft tall blow-up Bush figurine and were hucking their shoes at it! Did you see that? Yes, I think Obama is extremely popular down here. My new family was glued to the TV as well. Many places in town, people will ask "who do you like?...Bush or Obama?" Without getting into specific issues (in broken english), you just reply "Obama." They then say "yes, every American we ask says Obama also," but it's commonly followed with another question. With a perplexed look on their faces, they ask..."so why did Bush get re-elected for a second term?" Then you pause for a second and come up with the best explanation you can!

Anyway, I need to move on. Thanks for checking in and hopefully we can hook up soon (May perhaps).

Hasta luego,

Dave
Hey Dave. How are you? How's Central America? Are you getting to watch the inauguration? What to people think down there?

Hi Todd, I wondered if you had a chance to check out my discussion about "sustainable living arts guilds". So far I haven't gotten lots of commentary, but I really think that this or some variation would be a wonderful way to organize our re-skilling efforts, providing those wishing to learn new skills, with those in the community who know and practice them. What do you think? Nisa
