The governor heard a lot of people booing this new coal plant idea at the Green Festival. Hopefully, he got the message. Let's see if it sticks.

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Meetings, reskilling projects, neighborhood organization, visioning, flyering, networking, strategic planning.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
It's a positive movement based around a clear assessment of where we are, how we got here, and where we want to go. The inclusion of everyone possible, the exciting possibilities, and the focus on a scale at which individuals and small groups can make a serious difference are a few of the things that interested me. I fully expect to live to see the end of the cheap energy age, and I am looking forward to it as an opportunity to reshape our daily realities. This movement is the first phenomenon in which this perspective is valued, and I'm so happy to be meeting kindred spirits.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
Urban and suburban ecology and ecosystem management, the creation of new cultural stories based around a local and bioregional life perspective. I also have an MS from CU's Building Systems Program, a Permaculture Design Certificate, and other useful training. I've had lots of experience leading volunteers, doing ecological restoration work, designing and creating gardens, growing food, and connecting people in positive, new relationships, among many other things.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I know a few people, I have some project management experience, and I bring energy to causes and events in which I feel inspired.

Hey Steve~ I wanted to remind you that if you're going to sign-up for the Herb Garden class that Claire Zimmerman is teaching on June 6th, you should do it before May 15th to get the early bird discount. kz

Hi Steve

The PC article said clay pot method is better than drip irrigation.

I haven’t made any pots in LYons yet but know how-

How about if I ask Priscilla Cohan, not far from my house in Lyons, if a 2 or 3 of us (Ellen Rosenthal may also be interested) can make pots at her studio & ask how much it would cost for studio time, clay & firing, & see how many pots will fit in one firing? Then after we try it out can see what the real cost is & how much time it takes/per pot.

We can make them to sizes we want then, only one firing needed for bisque, No glazing. We can have fun using slab and coil building methods, both, & prototype pots in terra cotta.

I'll ask.

You probably could approach a potter in Boulder to offer you the same: studio time, clay & firing, & see how many you can make in X time, & figure out a comprehensive cost if you do want to do for yourself, or if you decide to go into production to sell to others figure out a price.

Your barrel would probably love a pot.

I'll let you know how it can work out here in LYons.

Cheers/
Coco

Steve,
Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. My weekend is filled up with work. However, sometime Mon. a.m. or Tues. a.m. would work for tea. Are you game? Respond via email or 303.241-9700.

Steve, please check out the Jan. 23 Transition Libraries event. We would love to have you come join us. Your insight and suggestions have been really helpful and I think you would bring a lot to this gathering. It's an all day conference and it is in Denver. If you can only come for a short time I think the 2:00-3:30 panel discussion would be the most valuable. If you can't make it I hope I get to meet you at some point in the near future.

Following up on your request for those who want to follow the new Boulder Comp Plan- Please keep me posted & weather wiling I'd love to be part of this to reinforce what is missing in the Plan.

You know there is a sustainable futures Commission in Boulder County, which Lyons has voted to be a part of, and meets monthly to discuss which parts of the plan to work on here in Lyons.

Am part of this group, it meets again on Jan 15th in Town Hall here, some Boulder people are part of this group.

Cheers/
Coco

Want to pay Xcel more for a new coal plant in 2009?

I've been following pretty closely the proposed rate hike for Xcel customers to bring Unit 3 of the Commanche coal power station online in November. There's an Op-Ed in today's Camera by Anne Butterfield that goes into pretty good detail about the deal that Xcel worked out with a lot of the big industrial energy consumers in Colorado, and what it will mean for Colorado's energy future if the PUC accepts the ra… Continue

Free Scale Bugs (and Citrus Trees) Available!

I bought a few citrus trees from Raintree Nursery last summer, and they came with some hitchhikers that have proven difficult to remove. I don't have the time to keep up with the bugs, and I'm thinking that it's time to get rid of the trees (which cost $50 + shipping each). If anyone is interested in taking them with the intent to fight the good fight and remove the scale bugs, I'd happily give them away.

Here is what I've observed about the scale bugs:

Wiping the leaves and branches with rubb… Continue

Rails - The Infrastructure of the Future

When I think of Peak Oil and Climate Change, my thoughts of the future are full of rather drastic changes. As I'm in my 20s, like most people my age I expect to live for at least another 40 years, if not more. We've all heard the predictions - by 2050, the world's population is projected to be around 9 billion, while industrialization is projected to continue increasing levels of consumption and pollution around the world. "Rich" countries are currently pledging to cut their greenhouse gas emiss… Continue

Shell Looking to Yampa to Wash Dirty "Oil" Shale

Shell Oil, apparently not satisfied with destroying the pine forests and wetlands near Alberta's Athabasca River, is buying up water rights on Colorado's wildest, most scenic river - the Yampa. The obvious use they have for the water is in washing kerogen-laden rocks in western Colorado and Utah, where they have been planning to scrape the bottom of the fossil-fuel barrel to extract hydrocarbons from rock formations.

The fact that… Continue
