Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I take classes and study independently
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I like to be self-reliant, not to depend on big corporations for my well-being and the well-being of my planet. I also like meeting people who will share their knowledge with me, and sharing my knowledge with them. It's nice to be able to have a real conversation about these topics.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I am a novice gardener and composter, and experimenting with things like sewing, knitting, and DIY methods. I cook from scratch under severe food restrictions, so I'm a creative cook.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I'm thinking...

Sustainability Paralysis

Sustainability can be emotionally paralyzing. If you take the theory of simplicity too far, you come to the conclusion that everyone and our planet would be better off if you just stopped living. Maybe it would be ok if you lived in a cave eating wild mushrooms and berries, but don't take too many, ok? You don't want to starve the wild animals.

And then you're left wondering if it's ok to enjoy life. Is it all right to use a computer considering the fossil fuels required to make and power them?… Continue

Bridging the gap

I had a rather rude awakening last night about the importance of bridging the gap between "granola" and mainstream. I'm going to make this a cornerstone of my education, and now I need to figure out what resources to use. That's not a daunting task or anything!

Winter education, gardening

My garden tanked this year, mostly. Planting season was disrupted by a death in the family, and now I know the value of being extremely prepared as early as possible. My experiment with Square Foot Gardening worked just well enough to see the potential if it's given proper care next year. Next year, I won't have to build the beds, buy the mix, or raise the trellis and can focus my experimental urges on the permaculture bed and container garden.

I did get some tomatoes, herbs, and malabar spinac… Continue

How's it going, Kate? Got a quick question for you. I'm starting to think about a woodworking workshop (maybe a series), probably in late spring when it's not too cold or too hot in my shop. 5 people or so, maybe cover tool basics, techniques, stuff like that.

So I'm curious, is there some thing in particular you'd be interesting in building if you were to come? I'm kind of stuck on what to make. Any ideas for me? Thanks!

Hi Kate,
I'm new to the Transition web and group activity. You are the first person I came upon and just wanted to say Hi. My background is also in Social Science, though I've been a carpenter/green builder for the past 17 years. I am going back to school for my Master's in the Arch. Engineering Dept. (Building Systems). I will be studying the science behind green building now rather than being the grunt who does it. (though I still love carpentry, just glad to be done having to do it full time.) I also give alot of thought to what constitutes the least impactful behaviors for the planet while still being able to havve a sense of joy and freedom in life. This leads me back to my renewed interest in the science of green building. There is technique, knowledge and skill to being responsive to our mother earth. Just like the members of Dumbledore's Army, we all have to take up the good fight, and come together, like what's happening in this group. Anyway, just wanted to say Hello and connect to you and others.

Hi Kate, I'm going to be running a fiber art group (textile art?) and am looking for good venues for holding our meetings. Something very pleasant and comfortable, easy for all group members to get to, and with good teas and coffee. Maybe we could meet at a location with potential next week. Perhaps something at 29th street? Can we also meet Monday evening? Nisa

Hi Kate, I was just thinking that because we live so near each other, it would be a good idea to carpool if we have events we are both attending. I don't know if you're interested, but I'm going to the Cornicopia of Local at the Outlook Hotel this weekend (wait- you're out of town aren't you...) and I'm going to the Seed Saving class in December. Want to come with me?
I also wanted to suggest, since I attended two cold frame classes last year, I can give you a general idea of what was taught in that class. I also have some greenhouse plastic if you want to try it out yourself. We're all pretty busy the next couple weeks, but if you have time and interest, just let me know.

Kate - Since one never know how these things will unfold, I will gladly accept your help when the time is right for you. Get back to me then and I will let you know where thing are sitting. I suspect most people maybe pretty pre-occupied until after the first f the year anyway.

Peace,

Zev

Thanks Kate - Having a short and well organized description of the Transition Town Movement, and how a company could get very good exposure by aligning itself with it would be a very helpful description. You up for crating a first draft?

Thanks!

Hi Kate!
Thanks! Drying in the car worked the best, because my precious fruit wasn't vulnerable to bees and bugs. But the trampoline was really awesome in that I could dry a whole lot at one time!

Hi Paul, Sorry for the delayed response. Life got way too busy in December. I'm out of town right now but will be back by January 1st. I'll call you to discuss what we did at the library and to see what we all can cultivate for 2010 in Colorado :)
