How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I'm a founding member of the Initiating Group for Transition Town Lyons and have attended the Training for Transition in Boulder. We're re-"locating" to New Hampshire and I hope to start an Initiating Group there and collaborate with other Groups in New England.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I love that the movement is based on engaged optimism and designing a positive vision for change. Decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels and relocalizing our communities has the potential to do so much: enhance our quality of life, reduce our collective greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen our local economies, help residents address rising utility costs, improve resilience to emerging global problems, and reconnect individuals to our community. I also appreciate that the Transition movement is an inclusive process that can help guide and unify the strategies developed for business, government, education, energy production, food acquisition, and sustainability.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I have a background in the psychology of change and am particularly interested in teaching others some of the internal skills that can support more sustainable living and the transition process. I have a BA in Physics, an MA in Somatic Psychology, and have done some post graduate work in whole systems education. I'm the former director of the Simplicity Forum (a national nonprofit helping people live simple, just and sustainable lives) and am the Co-Founder and Director of Education for the Green Heart Institute a local environmental education nonprofit. I am also a professional musician, writer, educator and public speaker.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
There are already several exciting programs emerging in Lyons to address economic and environmental sustainability and the Transition model can help enhance the effectiveness of those initiatives. I'm involved in several networks in town including the Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce, the Green Heart Community Initiative, the Women Supporting Women Network, and now the Transition Lyons Core Team who ultimately share many of the same goals.
A potluck!-good food and good talk!-sounds like a plan Margaret! Can't wait until you're back! My best to you up in Boulder, hoping you feel better each day!
Have you ever wondered if it could be done? Can you create a greenhouse that needs NO supplemental heating year round? – the answer is yes!! This greenhouse design, involving stored water as thermal mass and our bountiful Colorado sun, can be used w…
I can only speak to my own experience. For most of my life I took the lead from my father and his cohorts in developing my worldview. When he died (a personal catastrophe), I took a few years to examine every aspect of my life -- including my values…
Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delayed response. Life got way too busy in December. I'm out of town right now but will be back by January 1st. I'll call you to discuss what we did at the library and to see what we all can cultivate for 2010 in Colorado :)
