Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I serve as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Transition Colorado (formerly Transition Boulder County), and am the creator of "Deepening Community Leadership: A Course in Systems Transformation." I also co-founded the Transition Naropa University Initiative, one of the first of its kind in the world.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I believe that Transition represents a new paradigm of grassroots leadership, one that is positive, inclusive, self-organizing, easily replicable, and engages the head, heart, and hands of entire communities. Transition is the single most inspiring movement I have ever seen or been a part of.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I have been an Outward Bound wilderness instructor for at-risk and adjudicated youth, an organic farmer, and a community organizer. I am a graduate of the Environmental Leadership Master's Program at Naropa University and a certified Permaculture Designer.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I believe my most important contribution to the Transition Movement will be helping to train Transition Initiators to lead more successful Transition Initiatives.

Financial Permaculture

An important task for leaders everywhere is to be continually scanning the horizon for innovative models that can be adapted and applied to our life and work at home. One of the most promising of these that has come to my attention recently is The Financial Permaculture Summit, pioneered by a coalition of permaculture designers from around the world in collaboration with local citizens from the rural co… Continue

Transition Jobs

Transition doesn't have all the answers. It doesn't pretend to. Nevertheless, I have found myself more and more lately in the strange position of trying to employment advice. Whether the unemployment rate is 9.7%, as the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, or higher, as others have argued, it is my experience that an enormous number of people are actively looking for work right now. One great source for information on new green jobs in Colorado that I recommend is… Continue

All Models Are Wrong

In preparation for the Deepening Community Leadership course, beginning this Sunday, August 30th, in Boulder, I have been offering a number of free introductory workshops on Otto Scharmer's Theory U. One of the exercises we have done in each of these workshops has been to brainstorm together what we see as the old paradigm of leadership, and what we are sensing is emerging… Continue

What I'm Reading

Many have expressed a desire lately to share more of our resources with each other. This is not only limited to books, but also includes videos, websites, farms, teachers, venues, methodologies, skills, insights, and experiences. Here is my present contribution to that conversation. We may be compiling a formal list of these later as Transition Colorado, but until then, please reply to this blog with all your favorites.

The Project Support Project Concept

http://deepeningcommunityleadership.blogspot.com

It occurred to me this morning to share with you all a virtually unknown and understudied passage from Rob Hopkins' Transition Handbook. While few have paid much attention to the "Project Support Project Concept," it may be one of the most useful principles we can apply to our work. It not only distinguishes how a Transition Initiative is different from a commu… Continue

Dear Don,
Reading overall transition materials and book reviews, etc. I feel it would be helpful to members to move to specific addressing of the new paradigm containers need to hold new transition ideas. I posted an essay yesterday on my tranistion page: Collective Living: An Idea Whose Time Has Come. Colorado as a state has a rich mix of intentional communities. These become the carriers or social forms for implementing the new transition change ideas. I recommend you do a series of articles on Colorado intentional communities like Ecovillages and shared collectives where people are already doing income pooling, shared child care etc. History is roaring into our faces, and it is now the critical time to look at the social vehicles and structures that can carry and implement new visions. sincerely yours,Forrest Craver

Don-- The seed saving class I mentioned yesterday is offered through Lifelong Learning (Boulder Valley School District's community education program). Class sponsored by Abondanza Farms, with both sessions on Sundays (conflicts with community leadership seminars?). Link at the end of this posting.

So enjoyed yesterday's Heart & Soul seminar AND the participants. Thanks...H

Hi Don,
There isn't much happening in Transition Fort Collins. It has been slow growing it.
I had a meeting and one person came. We are having a Solstice Drum Circle to promote aligning with the Sun on the Solstice.
I can barely get people to post on the forum.
I have started several conversations but people are mostly lurkers. But I am hopeful that more and more people will get involved. It is growing slowly but surely.
