The thing which I am trying to figure out, is whether this shift in values you speak of, which I agree is at the core of the change we need, is possible to achieve with a "smooth" transition. ( I.e. can people gradually shift their perspective in a…

So many great classes! Can't wait. I'm working on the details of a bicycle maintenance workshop. Also would like to have a short series of working meetings with anyone interested on design of cold frames and inexpensive greenhouses tailored for pas…

While I respect the free speech rights of all Americans, sir, frankly I do not find much relevance of this blog post to the fundamental interests of this online community: finding ways to position our communities for long-term sustainability and qua…

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am just getting my feet wet. And muddy. In my garden.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I think it's not only totally necessary, but honestly, it sounds kinda fun too.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
Well, I like gardening, furniture making, and am an avid cyclist. I'm also a mechanical engineering who's dabbled in electric vehicles and alternative building techniques like straw bale.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
Any way I can fit in, I'll try. I do have some technical expertise that may be useful. And I can try to portray a positive face about the energy descent to people new to the concept.

The Pros and Cons of Bicycle commuting

Fellow Transitioners,

I am curious. What do you think about bike commuting? What should we be focusing on to make bike commuting a better option for all of us?

Like many of you, I'm pretty passionate about my two-wheeled friend(s). I'm also painfully aware of their limitations. Sometimes it seems like they are an automobile replacement in only the very best of circumstances.

What's YOUR perspective? I've put together a quick (just ten questions!) 3-minute survey to find out what you think. Pl… Continue

"It's Really Bad" - Oil Supplies Intentionally Overstated

From a blog post by Chris Martenson:

http://www.chrismartenson.com/blog/its-really-bad-oil-reserves-intentionally-overstated/31155

"The Guardian published an explosive article today. If true, it means that governments have been intentionally overstating the amount of oil that we have and could pump out of the ground. The implications are enormous..."

A Hidden Cost of Driving (that makes the bus much easier to take!)

I have to say I cringed at even posting this blog in the first place, given its lowly subject: transportation costs? When other people are writing truly inspirational, thought-provoking blogs on this Ning site about building community and the like?

But what the heck. Gotta start somewhere. And anyway, this is interesting, in a geeky sort of way.

You see, I'm part of the problem. I'm one of those Americans that lives over 20 miles away from where I work. And while I purchased a fuel-efficient h… Continue

Hi David - Thanks for your interest. I think that there are a few things we could do. First off, I'm going to be leading a workshop on December 12 that will go into the details of a Neighborhood Supported Agriculture project... If you think you or one of your delegates might want to dig right in, you could choose to attend... I can send you workshop details if you are interested. Another option is that I could come and present to your group, but I would need to be reimbursed for time. Please email me directly kippnash@hotmail.com.

Hi David, thanks for your note and I look forward to the class on Saturday. I don't need a new bin right now, so you don't need to get materials for me. Thanks for checking.

David, nice to meet you as well. The pic is one of my drawings. It's my version of the big bang. ;) I see that you are a furniture maker. I've wanted to learn carpentry for as long as I can remember. Are you teaching any classes?

Looking forward to working in the garden again.
