Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
We are building No Weed, No Water, No Till, Deep Mulch, Drip Irrigated Gardening Systems that:

- minimize the work involved by letting nature's processes function

- increase fertility the way nature does

We are building community through our garden projects because there are two ways to improve your standard of living:

- earn more money, or

- do more for ourselves
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Peak oil and global warming are symptoms of systemic problems. What we need are systems of production to heal nature and produce abundance.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I made my living practicing law and developed an understanding of how the agreements people maintain direct the flow of value through the system. I am also a long time organic gardener with a great deal of experience in self sufficiency techniques.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I offer Introduction to Three Dimensional Networking:

Your Favorite Books/Websites/Blogs/RSS Feeds for Information about the Transition Movement

How Humans Came to Live in Peace and Plenty

I am sharing this story because of inspiration I have taken from Forrest Craver's most recent posts:

There came a time in our community when we grew tired of arguing over who was right and who was wrong. Despite all the arguing there were still hungry people and the environment kept declining. What we needed was more places for people, plants and creatures to fit.

Then we came to realize that the market could not solve all our problems. The market is wonderful for what it does – a spur… Continue

Jethro Tull

In the early 18th century, Jethro Tull wrote a book called Horse-hoeing Husbandry in which he advocated vigorous tillage as the best way to make a profit at farming. We humans have been depleting soils around the planet ever since. Vigorous tillage, or plowing, burns the organic matter in the soil releasing nutrients faster than the plants can use them. It removes the protection of vegetative cove… Continue

An Open Letter

It has been a little over a year since the Transition Colorado web site was set up and as of this writing we have 1,137 members. That is impressive growth that, I think, reflects the level of understanding we have in Colorado about the seriousness of continuing a system dependent on fossil fuels. We can be proud of what we have accomplished this past year. And, this is a good time to think about how we can build on that accomplishment.

I am concerned, as I follow the activities on this site, th… Continue

Living in Place - Part 4

The first three posts on Living in Place brought you up to date on my experiments with these ideas. I can now give a blow by blow as new results come in. Last night we had a meeting of the Core Group for Transition Westminster/Arvada/Broomfield for the purpose of discovering our common values. We started by trying to answer the question 'Why Transition?' There is an on going discussion by the group in our group pages here on Transition Colorado but I woke up this morning thinking about these thi… Continue

Living in Place - Part 3

In my place most of the people are relatively well off. Most people are not aware of all the forces playing out around and through them. Most people are focused on their part in the set of transactions that create this ecosystem and this economy.

And I suppose that is how it has been since the beginning. We each start out completely dependent and learn what our community learned about how to fit – what it takes to survive. And then we focus on finding a place for ourselves and our primary conce… Continue

Hey \David, thanks for the friend thing! I was at the potluck at the Grange 6 weeks or so back, I don't know if you were there or we met! I see your post about designing the future and am looking forward to seeing this. I have been designing a straw bale addition to my house and have been amazed at the number of design issues I am dealing with.

Thanks again.

I know you are interested in neighborhood farming. The best approach I have heard of so far is to have a site or clearinghouse where some people offer their gardening skills, and some people offer a part of their yard.

One place to look is the Hyperlocavore ning site, but that is a national site.

I am in the process of starting a blog site for Boulder permaculturist gardeners, and think that might be a good place to start a neighborhood garden exchange. It needs to be very local, even neighborhood by neighborhood, as you say.

Email me directly if you like, or comment on my blog http://www.ecoyear.net

Dave,

Two things. 1 a question on the geometry, 2 Another Kin organization

First, the geometry. Why not be more efficient with the keyhole beds
by shifting alternate rows so they fit better? It would produce a more
honeycomb arrangment.

Secondly, I found an organization in Broomfield called 'Live well'.
