Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
As a founding member of Transition Denver, I have taken the vision of the movement into my neighborhood of Platt Park and became a board member of my neighborhood association as also joined their green team. This spring I formed a group called the Urban Growers, an off shoot of the green team. We put together a free educational series that ran from April through October called Gardening Through The Season. It was a great success. Powered with the tools of the Transition movement, I am helping to build a local, resilient, community focussed neighborhood.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I have been involved in social justice and environmental issues most of my adult life. I am also interested in the economic/financial ramifications of Peak Oil. I was introduced to the concept of Peak Oil in 2005 through Stephen Leeb's book The Oil Factor. The Transition movement is the first positive thing I have seen that addresses The Big Picture in a responsible, hopeful way. I am an avid gardener, and the principles of permaculture make so much since, I have been inspired to transform my yard.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
Finance, gardening, travel, astrology, holistic health, cooking, metaphysics, eastern philosophy, New Thought. I was a dietitian in the 1960's as well as a Home Economics teacher. I entered the Holistic health shortly afterwards. In the early 1980's I was a part time nutritional counselor and colonic therapist. I am retired, now, and have time to devote to my passions.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
By expanding and nurturing Transition Denver and by helping the Platt Park Green team with projects that achieve Transition goals.

Visioning for Denver neighborhoods

I'm a member of Trasition Denver and also a member of the Platt Park Green team. Both groups are beginning a visioning process for Denver. Here is one I presented at the PP team meeting. The format was taken from Rob Hopkins Transition Handbook. Please send your visions. Thanks.
I've decided to write a story about what Platt Park looks like in 2018 and how it got there.
Platt Park is far more locally oriented with many changes having been made in food and farming, medicine and health, education,… Continue

Hi Carol - Thanks for the suggestions.

Actually, Denver has a Climate Action Plan - it was approved about 2 years ago. It's not bad, but it also isn't going to get done what the planet needs to get done. I wrote comments on it that I can forward to you if you'd like. Basically, I said that their goals were too modest and that the plan was too top-down to be truly effective.

A couple of days ago, I did get a response from Greenprint Denver, and it turns out that I have a contact there - a guy I worked with in the City's Budget and Management Office, who now is their Deputy Director. A good guy, but pretty cautious. Anyway, my question was about Denver starting a Boulder ClimateSmart-like program, where homeowners can get loans that are then paid back through the property tax bill. Scott Morrissey, the Greenprint guy, said that there would TABOR issues and other issues with doing a bond-funded program. That's correct, and I would prefer to see a revolving loan fund be the vehicle for this. There is stimulus money available, and it could be supplemented with private donations. With bond-funded programs, there are high issuance costs and once the money is loaned, and paid back, the revenue goes to bondholders, and doesn't stay in the system to make further loans.

I'm working up a proposal for this now. Just came back from an Interneighborhood Cooperation meeting, where I pitched the idea, and Dana from the Transition Denver Steering Committee says they'd be interested in this, too, so I'm feeling good that we can make this happen!

I can only speak to my own experience. For most of my life I took the lead from my father and his cohorts in developing my worldview. When he died (a personal catastrophe), I took a few years to examine every aspect of my life -- including my values…

Hi Paul, Sorry for the delayed response. Life got way too busy in December. I'm out of town right now but will be back by January 1st. I'll call you to discuss what we did at the library and to see what we all can cultivate for 2010 in Colorado :)
