Colorado CA -

need to do the planning and coping in advance of worsening conditions.

Yes, this is exactly what we all here in Transition have been doing, for more than a year now. Learning permaculture, paying off debt, stocking up on staples, improving our soil, building community. Positive, optimistic steps.

Colorado,CA - what's your name? Do I know you?

I read that blog and started watching the Frontline video. I have my own observations. For the past year, since this recession took a turn for the worse, I've been asking businesses in the Broomfield/Westminster area how things are going. I'm constantly surprised to hear people tell me, "we're pretty busy" or "things are down maybe 5%, but not too bad" (this, from a carpet cleaning company). I've heard these comments from hairdressers, coffee shops, beauty supply stores, pet groomers, floor installers -- you name it. Yes, I know people who are unemployed and can't find a job they would want to work. Yes, there was at least one foreclosure in my own neighborhood. But I also know people who have turned DOWN jobs, who have found new ones, who are being offered new jobs even as they are still working. I'm posting my own observations here, and not necessarily summarizing or making generalizations about Denver or Colorado.

I experience that fear is a killer of creativity. As helpful as it is to be aware of the realities of our world, it's also easy to fall into a state of fear driven numbness. We're all addicted to entertainment in this culture, and others' suffering starts becoming yet another form of entertainment.

Nushin, all your ideas are great. I appreciate your initiative. Although I don't have answers to your questions, I encourage you to pick the ones you are passionate about and follow the path where it leads you. We will all be the better for it.
This weekend, I'm woking on paper work for the grant proposal. I'm also going to my Deepening Community Leadership class. Marci and I are also having our neighbor over for dinner (we hope). See you soon, ... dons

Thank you for the great film and discussion last night.

I went in to the City of Broomfield enviro. link. They are doing some positive things except the recycled rubber turf and mulch which has been conected to more lead toxicity.
I emailed the lady incharge of the division to see how a local group of passionate eco people can collaborate with the city and vise versa.

They do mention protecting the land, water system, conservation, cost reduction and limiting turf which can all be "common points" for framing our pitch and to get them envolved with Transition. So, having a "transition authority" within the city as mentioned in the film would be helpful.
There are videos you can see.

In the education realm or with children, are there any preset presentation points, curriculum, field trip suggestions or anything to use to not re invent the wheel?

Another thought I had was to add to the British model by engaging conscious corporations in the area. "When in the U.S. do as ...." :-)

In Broomfileld there is New Wave Foods with lots of sustainable programs for employees including a lunch area and reference library ...
it's good PR for them and our Transition can use their resources and sponsorship.
Are there any proposals of people having done this anywhere?

P.S. coming from the land of oil, I am actually gald we are running out of it!
Thanks.

Check out this mind-blowing article on Chris Martenson's website:

http://www.chrismartenson.com/blog/its-really-bad-oil-reserves-intentionally-overstated/31155

Chris offers a synopsis:

"The Guardian published an explosive article today. If true, it means that governments have been intentionally overstating the amount of oil that we have and could pump out of the ground. The implications are enormous."

Apparently a whistleblower at the International Energy Agency says that in order to prevent widespread panic, the US government has been complicit in understating oil supply and overstating future oil discoveries.

A nice WAKE UP CALL for any of us who have started getting lulled into a false sense of security about the impact of peak oil on our futures.
